the corona virus tracker app

PANDOA - saving lifes together
PANDOA - Corona Virus Tracking App Pandoa will notify you when you have contact with people who will later be identified as infected, and anonymously inform your close contacts if you are identified as infected

The app continuously records the movement data on the smartphone, but saves only your longer stays (>10min). The health status is also queried daily with a few details. This data is stored locally on the smartphone (without passing it on). If the user falls ill, he himself voluntarily provides his whereabouts and infection data in anonymized form in order to identify possible contact persons who should be informed: If there has been contact with another person in the last 14 days, they will receive a quarantine recommendation. This can reduce the spread of the virus because the infection chain can be tracked quickly and completely.
No personal data and no unique numbers (IDs) are passed on to the PANDOA server or others.

How does PANDOA work?

The app tracks the movement of your phone and saves it on the device (no login or upload).

The app downloads anonymous position data from infected COVID-19 patients and compares them with your movements.

If there has been contact for more than 5 minutes in the past few days, the app recommends voluntary quarantine.

PANDOA in everyday life

I want to be able to move as freely as possible and still be informed about risk contacts in good time.

PANDOA is the interface, on the one hand, to indicate my own risk and, on the other hand, to inform the health system as quickly as possible if new sources of infection appear. We value an easy-to-use tool, while maintaining control over my data.

How do I experience my own risk? PANDOA will inform me if I have had contact with a risk person in the past few days. In return, I personally provide my whereabouts in an anonymized form should I fall ill myself.

How is the health system prepared for new sources of infection? By anonymously providing the locations of high-risk individuals, PANDOA identifies foci of infection early on by doctors and hospitals, and the health system can respond regionally.

The open source interface PANDOA

The app is open-source and can be supplemented with information from other applications. Already developed are the interfaces for the precision of my risk by connecting self-diagnosis tools (e.g. CovApp of the Charité), as well as the support of models for the future spread probability of the virus (e.g. SIR models) and the possibility to voluntarily provide my data for epidemiological research (e.g. machine learning analysis of pooled data sets).

For this purpose we are already in contact with the developers of some tools, also from the #WirVsVirus challenge (see below).

Why corona tracking is so important.

The app is the result of a 48h hackathon. We are working on getting it into the appstore and playstore as soon as possible. If you already want to test the app, please send a short email with your iCloud email address to robert@polyxo.de or to info@pandoa.de.

Due to the current Apple and Google guidelines, we also need the support of public bodies (ministries and aid organisations) to publish the PANDOA App. Therefore we invite these public bodies to send us letters of support (LOI).

On the occasion of the WirvsVirusHackaton2020 a colourful team of more than 20 developers, project managers, doctors and graphic designers met for the first time in virtual space and already 48 hours later we can present you an executable app with open interfaces.

Frequently asked questions (FAQ)

The app is unobtrusive and intuitive to use. PANDOA continuously records my motion data and stores it locally on the smartphone for 14 days*. Not all movements are recorded, but only the places where I spend more than 10 minutes. In addition, the most clinically critical parameters of my health status are queried daily: body temperature, quarantine status, infection status. Together these data are stored locally on my smartphone without being shared. According to my voluntary health status information, the app gives country-specific recommendations for further action. If I fall ill myself, I can share my whereabouts of the last days with all other users in an anonymous form. This is important, because I could have spread the virus before the signs of illness appeared. So I can sensitize my fellow men for the appearance of symptoms of illness.

The protection of your data is important to us (no user IDs):

  • The app tracks the movement profile of your mobile phone and stores long term locations locally on the device.
  • The app downloads anonymized locations from infected users who have voluntarily uploaded them.
  • The app only compares the past locations on your mobile phone and reports possible contact (>10 min duration).
  • No login is necessary.
  • No personal data and no unique numbers (IDs) are passed on to the PANDOA server or others.

The COVID-19 virus is highly contagious. While I infect about 1.4 more people with an influenza infection in autumn, I pass on the COVID-19 virus to about 3 people. These numbers seem similarly low at first. However, each person infected by me passes on the virus with the same probability. After only 10 transmissions from person to person, I was the first influenza carrier to infect 29 other people, but with COVID-19 I have already infected 59,049 people.

The tracking is done by GPS, which is provided by your smartphone. To do this, mobile data transfer must be activated in the settings and sufficient network coverage must be available.

All your personal data will be treated with the utmost care.

The data is recorded locally on my smartphone and the storage time is limited.
I decide myself when I want to share which data in anonymous form.
According to the incubation period of the COVID virus and the infectiousness associated with it, my location data from the period approx. 7 days before/after the appearance of the symptoms are stored and shared anonymously with other users inside.

The tracking of individual persons is not possible (In the video this presentation serves to illustrate the actual functionality of the algorithm). However, I can identify regions with a high infection density on a map.

*Period of storage corresponds to current knowledge about the maximum incubation period of COVID-19.
